The Merchant Sisters are Tigerlily Valentine and Ophelia Vespertine. Tigerlily, or Tiggy, was born five minutes before Ophelia, or Phe, her twin. Although it may be hard to tell, they are identical.

The twins were born into the circus. Indeed, it was in a big top, amongst the sequins and the scent of wild animals that their mother pushed them into the world. It is all that the twins have known, and they have no wish to venture into the ‘real’ world.

When the girls are not dazzling audiences with their aerobatic feats they immerse themselves in a dream world of their own making. They can often be found sprawled lazily on a bed of cushions in their caravan, braiding pretty ribbons into each others’ hair. Although they may be different, they are definitely cut from the same silken cloth, and they rare fiercely protective of one another.

Tigerlily (Tiggy) is a feral young thing that dances through life and cannot stay still. She is like the wild flowers in the meadow that somehow look sad when arranged in a vase on a mantelpiece. A great part of her charm is that she is so delightfully free and will never be caged.

Tiggy’s life is mainly a nocturnal affair. She awakens every evening to watch the sunset before preparing herself for the night’s performance. When the crowds disperse, the children yawning and rubbing their tired eyes, she makes her way to the candy floss stand. With this nightly treat she makes her way to the back of the big top where the ring master oversees the celebration of another successful show. There she will laugh and dance with the clowns, fire breathers and contortionists under the stars until the roaring fire is nothing but a pile of glowing embers.

On returning to the small caravan that she shares with her sister, Tiggy will indulge her creativity. In the summer months when the night air is warm and carries the faint aroma of spice and ozone, she will lie under a canopy of Chinese lanterns and write poetry or read. After watching the sun arrive with the dawn she retires to her bed where she sleeps, dreaming riotous dreams.

Ophelia (Phe) is a child of the night and is friends with all its mischievous inhabitants. A lifetime of nocturnal performances has left her with an intolerance of sunlight, though this is thought to be more mental than physical. She shuts herself away during the day and, on the rare occasions that she ventures out at such a time, is never seen without a wide brimmed veiled hat. This lifestyle has left her with pearly white skin – Phe is unashamedly proud of this. Only Tiggy has ever seen the smile that rarely dances across Phe’s face. Phe is a sullen looking girl, although she would tell you that she is ‘smiling on the inside’.

Phe is a largely solitary creature. While her sister dances in the firelight she will lurk in the shadows before slipping back to their caravan. She will curl up in a dark corner with only the light of a candle to illuminate the words of the books that she so rabidly devours. The night air will be thick with the scent of her incense that constantly burns near an open window.
